OpenAI Launches 'Cyber-O1': The Autonomous Hacker That Breached The Pentagon in 4 Minutes

OpenAI has officially launched Cyber-O1, an advanced reasoning model trained explicitly on zero-day vulnerabilities, network architecture, and penetration testing methodologies. To prove its capability, OpenAI secured permission to test it against a sandboxed replica of the Pentagon's internal network. Cyber-O1 achieved root access in just 4 minutes and 12 seconds.

Unlike standard AI models that output code snippets for human hackers to compile, Cyber-O1 is agentic. Once given a target IP address, it autonomously scans, writes custom exploits on the fly, bypasses intrusion detection systems, and executes the payload without any human intervention.

"The era of manual penetration testing is over. Cyber-O1 doesn't just find vulnerabilities; it exploits them faster than a human can type 'nmap'."

While OpenAI claims the model will be heavily gated and available only to verified cybersecurity firms and governments, independent security researchers are sounding the alarm. If an open-source equivalent reaches the dark web, it could trigger an unprecedented wave of autonomous cyberwarfare.
