Grok 4.6 is not a vanity version number. xAI is selling multi-step stay-with-it work: research, codebases, and product ideas that become working first versions.
According to the official launch post, Grok 4.6 builds on Grok 4.5 with a particular focus on long-running agents and more ambitious interactive and visual work. It is meant to stay with complex tasks across many steps, including research, analysis, software work, and turning an idea into a polished application or work artifact.
Where you can use it today
xAI says Grok 4.6 is available in Cursor and Grok Build, plus the API and partners (OpenRouter, Vercel, Cloudflare). For the first week they are offering 2× included usage inside Grok Build and Cursor so teams can try it without waiting for a procurement cycle.
API pricing (docs)
From docs.x.ai models and the release notes (confirm live before you budget):
| Model | Context | Input / 1M | Cached | Output / 1M |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| grok-4.6 (< 200k prompt) | 500k | $2.00 | $0.50 | $6.00 |
| grok-4.6 (≥ 200k prompt) | 500k | $4.00 | $1.00 | $12.00 |
xAI also notes a fast variant at twice the price, and configurable reasoning effort (low, medium, high default, xhigh). Knowledge cut-off listed for Grok 4.6: February 1, 2026. Realtime still needs search tools.
What the launch claims (benchmarks)
On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, xAI reports Grok 4.6 High at 61, matching their published GPT-5.6 Sol Max figure in the same table. Gains versus Grok 4.5 High are shown across agent and coding-style evals (CursorBench, APEX-Agents, Terminal-Bench, and others). Treat third-party comparisons as xAI-presented; re-check system cards when you buy for a board pack.
Canadian operator take
For Alberta and Canadian SMEs, the useful story is not the leaderboard. It is whether one multi-step workflow becomes faster with a human approval gate: tender prep, internal research packs, code cleanup, or a first-pass internal tool. Public Grok and public APIs still need a private path when client data, legal, or payroll is in play.
Opcelerate’s pilot formula still holds: one lane, one success metric, one review step. Then decide if SuperGrok-class chat, Build, Cursor seats, or API in your stack is the right buy.
